Reinventing the Wheel

It just amazes me to see how every generation of young coaches have to reinvent the wheel. No need. Connect with people who have been there before and the journey is much easier and direct. These the exact words from coaching legend Tom Tellez to me in 1982 "Why don't you come and spend three days with me, no need for you to make same mistakes I have made." Those three days changed my coaching. The path became more direct and clear. Who will it be for you?

  1. The glitch in that mentality today, Vern, is that young coaches ego wont allow them to ask for or accept help, and that it’s easier to act like other coaches are idiots and “you” are brilliant, than to be ok with knowing you can learn from others – at ANY point in your career.
I know for me, I can admit that I had to overcome feeling like I shouldn’t have to ask questions and investigate what others are doing. It was a dumb mentality! And recognizing it made me much better at what I do, and capable of being much much better still.
Likewise, it just amazes me, how some coaches seem so willing to totally downplay others ideas, especially “old” ideas or ideas they don’t hold strongly. Just reviewing “social media”… It’s amazing the willingness to downplay and ridicule vs debate. There seems to be no room to be ok with a difference of opinion – like the old Tip O’Neil / Ronald Reagan being buddies, but also capable of some tremendous political debate and differences style of relationship.
I’m rambling, your post just got me thinking and I appreciate that – thanks!
