When you think about going for the quick fix, just quickly
run this simple paradigm through your head. It all relates to time for
adaptation. Nothing complicated. Don’t over think this. This is a just a
general guideline, a reminder, that the process of adaption to training takes
time.
Flexibility improves day to day
Strength can be improved from week to week
Speed (A fine motor quality) improves from month to month
Work Capacity improves from year to year
Based on the law of reversibility
You can lose flexibility from day to day
You can lose strength week to week
Speed declines month to month
Work Capacity declines year to year.

I use the same general adaptation guidelines when I teach program design classes, but have never thought about the implications with respect to reversibility … it’s so simple and elegant, it kind of makes me feel stupid … I wish I could have had this ‘aha’-moment … I stubmled upon these guidelines in Bompa’s book several years ago, is that where you got them?!

Coach Gambetta,
i was wondering what you considered the definition of “work capacity”? I struggle to find a physiological definition myself. I always end up coming back to Energy Systems Development or something like that. What are your thoughts?

Great post! Keep it simple…many people put anxiety into their workout plans…they expect things to happen much quicker than what is reasonable. There really isn’t a quick fix and becoming stronger/improving cardio function/losing weight is not stressful!
