Someone send me this last
week: “Mike Boyle's RFESS (rear foot
elevated split squat) has made some serious waves in the strength and
conditioning community. I think that is important that he dares say no to back
squat or front squat any more.” I think this is a sad commentary on the
strength and conditioning community. What will it be next, I am not interested
in creating controversy or getting in a pissing contest, but at least be consistent?
Ten years ago it was the front squat that was it nothing but the front squat,
now it is this. For me it is not about selling the latest DVD (I don’t have any
– nor will I anytime soon) it is about educating. Regardless of the exercise
there is no one way. A comprehensive strength training program includes
squatting movements, pulling movements, pushing movements and bracing
movements. Squatting is a fundamental human movement. Gait is fundamental to
human movement. Gait occurs of off one foot onto to another foot that is my simple
rationale for including single leg (Single leg squats) and reciprocal leg
exercises (lunges and step-ups) in a good sound strength training program. This
has been my rationale for years; it dictates the selection of lower extremity
and total body exercise on my exercise menu. Resistance should progress from
bodyweight to appropriate external load based on the chronological and training
age of the athlete and the sport. This is not Strength Coach Version 4.159, it
is just sound training methodology that I learned at UCSB in Dr. Button’s Foundations of Conditioning class in
1969. By the way one of the textbooks in that class was Pat O’Shea’s book Scientific Methods and Principles of
Strength Fitness, a classic work everyone should read. Once again I
implore all of you to get beyond the hype, marketing, bravado and THINK! Sound
training methodology and best practice dictates that your exercise selection
fit the demands of the sport and above all does no harm.

i have NO DOUBT mike boyle is selling something. he comes out with a “new” theory every few months and most of it is based on pure reductionism. off the top of my head in the past 2 years he has promoted transversus abs. no trunk rotation. psoas strength. glute max activation. isolated joint training based on an idea of alternating mobility/stability of each joint segment. it goes on and on with no end in site…..

This may be off topic but i am a bit confused you have DVD’s and other products that you sell? Look i don’t agree with everything MB does but if you look at the context of what he does and the success he has had then SOME of the things he does is fine. He is not a coach that just gets a cert and thinks they know everything he continually tries to learn. That is what is great about this industry there are many ways to get the job done. I like some of the things you talk about but some things i think i will never use or i feel outdated same thing with every other coach who is still coaching not these GURU’s who don’t even work with anyone anymore.
Oh and is it a crime to sell something people want?

When I was at a Summit I felt like MB and other promoters/sellers there were attached at the hip trying to find some new explanation for a new rash of injuries or something to create better athletes – all of which required purchasing something. No doubt they all work hard and are pretty smart guys but they are making it way harder than necessary. Just my 2 cents worth.

Coach Gambetta,
After hearing all the comments from everyone each of you make great points. However you comments on “THINKING” is what I would hope everyone gets.
Coach Boyle does have some good points but we should THINK and see if the prescription fits the need. He at the end of the day is creating much conversation healthy or not we should not think less of anyone else but just hope that people can read and think for themselves. It is amazing for the little exposure I have in the industry 12 years that everything is not proven the only thing is to take a evidence based approach and be apprehensive with anyone comments.
I still will always take the time to listen everyone comments since this generation is a online community that hopefully goes to books and research journals and reads them for themselves.
Thanks for all post!
Tim
This is called Symptom Training or ST – you buy into “creating a disease then inventing the cure”
