I find it very interesting to watch how hard people work at
being average. It is easy to be
average so I don’t really understand why people work at it but they do. Ever
notice how those that choose to be average are always making excuses, it is too
hot or it too cold. They overslept or didn’t get enough sleep. They forgot
their water bottle. They forgot their spikes or their bathing suit and on and
on. They are the ones who cut corners in workouts. I have no tolerance for this. I accept that people have different
abilities, what I cannot accept is not working to maximize the ability you
have. Choose to be the best you can be, don’t accept being average. Give it
your best effort; take some risks, try a little harder. Many are called and few choose – it is a conscious choice. Choose to be the best you can be and
then do something about it, take action, start now, not tomorrow or the next
day. Set a level of expectations that demands reaching higher.

Totally agree, Vern. However, virtually all human beings put out average effort at SOMETHING. I used to be a TA in college. I’ve worked with many D1 athletes. Many of them were outstanding athletes, who had a great work ethic in training. But many were very average, and some were even poor students. I know many people who are very average employees, but outstanding husbands and fathers. I know a few who are outstanding employees AND family men, yet they pay very little attention to the financial future of their family. I’ve known people who were great coaches, but terrible spouses. Rare is the person who puts in 100% effort in every single things that he/she does.

I wasn’t gifted with an extraordinary talent but I (at least most of the time) gave my best effort, and you know what? Like you said Vern……sometimes taking that risk of something “more” produced results that surprised me. Beating someone with more talent now and then, or being selected as Captain of the HS wrestling team when there were several guys better than I ever was. Or suddenly moving up to a new level in something because I gave it my all for a sometimes even a brief moment. Mind, body and spirit ARE connected, and connected very strongly!
