Three Cups of Tea

My 114th book
read (and last, I begin a new list tomorrow) since September 1, 2008 definitely
was one of the best. Three
Cups of Tea – One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace … One School at a Time

by Greg Mortenson and  David Oliver Relin. This book was inspirational and
highly inf
3CTCoverSmallormative about a part of the worlds that is in the news every day, yet
we know very little about the area. Mortenson is a former mountaineer who after failing
on an attempt to scale K2 was inspired to build a school in a remote village
in what is called the tribal areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan. This lead
to a project to build more schools i
n remote villages, especially for girls. I think the title ought to be “Books not Bombs”
because he shows how much good will and change can occur through education.
Read this, it will give you some insights into Islam, Pakistan and Afghanistan that
you will not get in the evening news.

  1. Vern, three summers ago my wife started assigning this book as summer reading for students in her Junior year English class. The inspiration of this book has led to our students raising enough money to build a school in Tanzania and a project in St. Bernards Parish Louisiana related to Katrina Relief. Truly an amazing read and demonstrates what good in the world a truly motivated individual can do.
